As an umpire myself who calls the plate every day, it is tough to get that
call right. Everything takes place so fast, and the plate umpire has a first responsibility of watching the pitcher. We have several local high school pitchers that throw sixty mph, and that gets the ball to home plate very quickly. There are very, very few slap hitters in the games, so that helps with the calling of the game. Also, I know which players will slap when they come to bat, and that helps with the call.
