that doesn’t seem to be slowing down. I’ve gravitated towards watching non-revenue sports like softball and lacrosse over the years. If what you posted about Whit and additional scholarships is our reality this puts VT in a tough spot. It’s almost like we will have to choose between investing in a very small number of non-revenue sports or spreading scholarships around just so VT can earn a participation trophy in more sports. You already noted the increased number in scholarships for softball. Women’s lacrosse goes from 12 to 38 - that is 26 new scholarships! Coach Skiera is already struggling to field a competitive team in the ACC under current limits. Roster limits are increasing for almost every sport. I don’t know how VT will decide to use the additional 40-45 you noted, but as a fan I’d like to see bigger investments in the non-revenue sports that have proven they can compete. I’m a big women’s lacrosse fan and as much as I do not want to say this, if adding 2-3 scholarships is the best VT can do it’s time to reconsider funding a sport like lacrosse. Club may be the better direction. I believe VT will need to offer a minimum of 18 scholarships (+6) for lacrosse to have any chance of competing. This number seems to align with a typical playing rotation. There may be 38 on the team but more typically coaches play a rotation of maybe 15-18. At 18, there is little room for error, but w/o this minimum level of investment it may be time to reconsider funding the sport versus giving the suggested 2-3 scholarships to another sport like softball that has a proven history. I do not like the state of college sports today, but there doesn’t seem to be any turning back. VT will need to decide if they want to compete in a few sports or simply go through the motions with many and earn participation trophies. Club sports is starting to not sound so bad now.
