Why should team carry so many players when they can reload, and do, from year to year from the portal? It made sense to have so many when you had to depend upon developing recruits, but those days are gone. This is especially true if we have to pay everyone.

Scholarship this year. But we'll throw in an extra $50,000 in nil as an under the table scholarship. Accomplishes the same as a scholarship, and allows you to have more than 85 "scholarship" players

on this one. I have seen some underrated walk-ons at Virginia Tech and other schools prove a lot of people wrong. I don't understand if someone is paying their own way, why they would try to stop that. However, I think the bigger point in our lawsuit happy country right now, here comes another one. All of these lawsuits are going to slow the heck out of the resolution of just about everything in college sports. One lawsuit, just ties up another one. Many think that the ACC will just settle the cases quickly, but with so much at stake, why would they?

With the wide open transfer rules, a player can start at a G5 or lower school for a year and then move up to their dream power level school. The opportunity still exists, but in a different form. Now if someone does love VT as a school and also wants to play football here, then they will have to choose. I think it makes sense to leave room for 5-10 walkons while also reducing roster sizes to 90-95 people. Seems like a compromise here would be appropriate. But this is the NCAA so who knows what they will do.

Your point about lawsuits and others mentioning NIL and then of course schools being creative for getting around rules. If the NCAA does this then I could see the next move being from schools to get what they want. If I’m a head coach, I still recruit walkons but have them “train” for a year under the guidance of the NIL collective staff (which include former players and coaches). Maybe even have them sign a one year contractor agreement to get some salary from the NIL while they train. So they get all the benefits of trying out for a team, with the only limit that they can’t practice directly with the team that year. It’s just a normal college student with a job in the eyes of the NCAA. But reality could be a new method to hoard talent if the walkons go away. Just random thinking out loud and speculation on my part.
