College Football Playoff Considers Major Format Change Ahead of 2025 Season
If this goes through, I would guess that maybe the P2 are okay with 16 in 2026. No byes, everyone plays in the first round...or at least I hope so. PS I would also like to see the Conference Championship or whatever Conference play in games go away for everyone playing week zero OOC rivalry games* and having Army Navy the week of Conference Championship game, so that pretty much everyone gets a bye that weekend. *Thanksgiving weekend becomes Conference Rivalry weekend, so everyone has a big game and everyone gets a bye the next weekend, but all of this is probably more than they can handle in their heads. :-) ** Edited by Stech at 4/3/2025, 1:07:56 PM

Just another opportunity for the P2s to take even more control the playoffs
Now the P2s have the opportunity to game the system so they secure most (or all) of the byes and first round home games.

This is the last year the non P2 have some leverage, hopefully they use it
well.

Top 4 champs should at least get a first--round home game
They should stipulate that all the top 4 conference champs are seeded no lower than 8th, guaranteeing each at least a first round home game. Winning a conference championship should hold SOME value over being the third or fourth place team from the B1G or SEC. It would probably never happen, but I would even be okay with all five champs being guaranteed a top 8 seed. We might actually see some first round upsets.

That’s a great idea!! Especially if they go to 16 in 2026.
