Nice article. Some comments empathetic to Duke.
I feel bad for Duke. They held their own under Cutcliffe and are even looking better under Elko. If anything they should be rewarded. But they just don't have the fan support in these crazy days of expansionpalooza.
On several occasions, I have advocated for a relegation and promotion system. It would be perfect for Duke. If they were in the third tier in football, I don't think they'd care. But there would be a systematic way to compete in the sport with similar competitors. If they overperformed, they would move up. And it wouldn't impact basketball.
One of the things I like about the EFL/Premier League is it makes room for the overachieving little guy. There are several teams with small stadiums (and I presume small but passionate followings) playing at the top tier because they've earned it. Bournemouth (12k stadium) and Brentford (19k stadium) are in the PL and it is totally no big deal. Who knows, they might get relegated this year, and never return. But it's handled on the field, systematically.
This Duke article saddens me. It saddens me that it has to even be written. That they have to be concerned about their great basketball tradition, just because of football.
