most from it. Heck all the schools probably want the same thing regardless if they are willing to admit it or not. Hence why I don't have much sympathy for the schools because they have only themselves to blame for getting themselves in it this situation. First, it was the schools deciding to create the 3 division levels in 1971 because schools had different commitment levels to the role sports should play on campus and they wanted to compete under different rules. Then in 1978 the DI schools decided to split football into 2 subdivisions for similar reasons. In 1984 Oklahoma and Georgia (who most people forget) decided to sue the NCAA to gain a lot more control over their broadcasting rights. Then in the late '80s the SEC decided to use a little known bylaw to create a CCG in football. In the early '90s the BCA was form with the Big Ten, Pac-10, and Rose Bowl not participating because they wanted to maintain their tradition. Then in 1995 the BCA was rebranded to the BCS because the 3 remaining holdouts were willing to participate now. Eventually the BCS was essentially rebranded into the FBS Playoffs because enough people wanted to change how the FBS did its postseason. Along the way conferences either expanded, shrank, died (i.e. WAC in football or Great Midwest, Metro, Great West, etc.), and/or even was reborn (i.e. WAC as a DI-FCS football conference...of sorts). Each one of those decisions made was made purely out of self-interest. Why should any decisions made today or in the future change? People like to say that it is time for the NCAA to die. They may well be right for various reasons. However, why are people so sure that a new organization, regardless of the name, somehow be any different? Over time the schools molded the NCAA into exactly what they wanted the organization to be or at least what the majority of the schools on the various NCAA committees wanted the organization to be at the time of the decision. Why are people so sure that the same problems that plague the NCAA now won't carry over to the new organization? Eventually I do think the P2s will probably need to split from the rest of DI regardless whether they remain in the association or form their own association. I don't think that would necessarily be a bad thing for college athletics. It would give the DI schools an opportunity for the subdivisions to recombine (if so desired) and let the NCAA bear the administrative burden of running the postseason for football. The FBS schools should be open to the idea because it could be the perfect opportunity to cut cost without necessarily sacrificing non-revenue sports in the process. Essentially return college athletics close to its original (late 1800s) intended purpose while factoring in changes (i.e. NIL, media contracts, etc.) that occurred along the way.
