I thought that is was closer so I Googled it. UVa was 6K in 1965.

Both schools saw increased enrollment with all of the baby boomers coming on. In 1970, uva had 10K an VT had 13.5 (both grad and undergrad.) So from where I got my data, the enrollments look fairly parallel. VT started taking off particularly in the 21st century. But to your point, I had always thought that uva had been larger than VT but maybe it was more so leading up to the 60's.
