Your second point may not be as big of an issue if the administrative is

smart with its strategy. The whole point of being a member of a P2 conference is so a school can tap into that additional revenue source. If VT is smart in how it approaches the extra money and uses it to improve a non-revenue sport's chances at winning a NCAA team national championship, then I do believe it will eventually happen. At that point the school can then sell the success to the fan base to encourage them to increase their financial supports that matter more to them. Essentially the pressure of not winning a team national championship will no longer be a monkey on the athletic department's back. If Miss State can finally win a NCAA team national championship, then why not VT?
