thread is how the P2s and the non-P2s classify their athletes (i.e. employees vs. student-athletes). Even if the athletes are classified as employees for certain sports and student-athletes for other sports, it may be difficult for the P2s and non-P2s to still compete against each other. People may or may not remember that up until the early 1990s (I think 1991), DI schools were allowed to compete at the DII and DIII in a sport or two. The schools primarily used the loophole for football so they didn't have to deal with the cost associated with competing in either the DI-FBS or DI-FCS. The reason the DI schools changed the bylaws is because they believe the DI schools had an unfair competitive advantage over their DII or DIII opponents due to the program having access to DI resources (i.e. facilities, support services, money) that isn't currently available to the DII and DIII schools. I would think that same issue would come up between the P2 vs. non-P2 regardless of the status of the athletes. Even if the athletes are determined to be student-athletes for a sport, those P2 programs could have access to the same resources that are available to the athletes that are considered to be "employees." Whereas the non-P2 programs would be at a similar disadvantage as the DII and DIII programs.
