compete with a majority of the AAU schools that can get Tech's award winning researchers and professors to work there. UVA can afford to pay top researchers big bucks. Tech can hold on to a few but most of them go where they can earn a larger salary. Professor salary is one of the AAU's requirements. Most of the AAU member institutions have large graduate schools.
