Good question
The only thing I can think of is maybe the airport where they were going has a runway that could not take the weight of this airplane. Way back in the 1950s, I was going to take a trip to Lynchburg,Va in a C-119. Had to land at Danville because Lynchburg could not take the C-119.

Or they put too much fuel in it that made them overweight.**
