I took 3 years of Latin in middle school and HS. All 3 years I had the

opportunity to read copies of Roman text (letters, campaign ads, festival announcements, etc.) in their original form. Some of the examples were from Plenty the Elder and Plenty the Younger. The "story" for 1 of the textbooks (Latin I or Latin II...I forget which) was set in Pompeii. The eruption was "covered" in the last chapter of the textbook with actual photographs (including human remains) from the site. Keep in mind I was in 8th grade (middle school) in '91, so things are probably different than how they teach Latin today.
