Technically, Pliny the Elder's body was never found and no one witnessed

how he died. So everyone assumes he died somehow during the eruption. Given the excavation at Pompeii, it is possible they have either found his body (and haven't identified it) or it is still buried waiting to be discovered. It is just as likely his body was cremated along with the other unknowns lost to history at Pompeii and Herculaneum.
