• Charles City Shire: Established along the James River, this territory continues to exist today as Charles City County.
• Charles River Shire: Renamed York County in 1643, this area was a hub of colonial development along the York River.
• Elizabeth City Shire: This shire is legally extinct; its lands were consolidated into the independent City of Hampton.
• Henrico Shire: Positioned further inland along the James River, it still exists today as Henrico County.
• James City Shire: Centered around Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement, it remains active as James City County.
• Warwick River Shire: Legally extinct, this shire became Warwick County before eventually consolidating into the modern independent City of Newport News.
• Warrosquyoake Shire: Renamed just a few years later in 1637, this territory became modern-day Isle of Wight County.
