Virginia currently has seven federally recognized tribes and eleven state-recognized tribes, with some state-recognized groups lacking federal recognition
Federally Recognized Tribes (largest to smallest by community size)
Pamunkey Indian Tribe – King William County; one of the oldest continuously recognized tribes in Virginia, with a long-standing reservation and active community.
Rappahannock Tribe, Inc. – Indian Neck, King & Queen County; active in cultural preservation and governance.
Upper Mattaponi Tribe – King William County; smaller community but active in tribal governance.
Nansemond Indian Nation – Suffolk and Chesapeake; larger community due to multiple locations.
Monacan Indian Nation – Amherst County; significant reservation and active governance.
Chickahominy Indian Tribe – Charles City County; active in cultural and educational programs.
Eastern Chickahominy Indian Tribe – New Kent County; smaller community than the main Chickahominy.
