Does either your car, or your wife's car have a HomeLink System?

If so, then program at least one of your vehicles to use it, and let the other use the remote...lol (That's the cheapest and easiest way to deal with the issue to avoid building a bridge or trying to incorporate it into your home network.) Next easiest step, buy a garage door opener for your specific garage opener. You might have to hit Ebay for one if it's really old.
