This is a pretty good breakdown of the contract...

Obviously huge risk with the deal, but (a) there's no cap, and (b) it's not my money. If the question is whether the Mets could have used the money elsewhere to make the team better, that's certainly possible. But, again, there's no cap. By Fangraphs measures, Soto was worth $65M last year, and $54M and $48M the two previous years. He's only 26 now, and while he most likely will not be very productive at the back end of the contract, $51M won't be worth nearly as much by then (as hard as that is for me to believe).
