On a purely theoretical level, I feel like property taxes are technically

unconstitutional. We are guaranteed security in our persons, houses, papers, and effects against unreasonable search and seizure by the 4th Amendment. Property taxes effectively mean that none of your property is ever secure. The government gives itself permission to take whatever property from you they want. Granted, the other technicality is that the Constitution only limits the Federal Gov't power. Property taxes are not Federal taxes, they are State and Local taxes, which I assume is why they are legal. That said, the idea I've seen thrown around of a Federal wealth tax on billionaires would absolutely be unconstitutional (barring a new Amendment). I get that governments need to get money from somewhere. I just would prefer the revenue come from consumption taxes, and not property or income taxes.
