It's the connectivity now. People with wild conspiracy theories have always

existed but prior to the internet their theories were usually contained to a town/city and mostly ignored. But now you've got the ability to access thoughts of people from anywhere on anything. So if you believe the Earth is flat... guess what you can find more people who also believe that. And you can point to those people and say "See I'm not crazy. These other people think the same thing." In the thread below I've seen both of those same exact Twitter posts linked on various social media. So you've got two people saying something that may or may not be true (one isn't even speaking about the current hurricane) and yet those two "accounts" have been amplified to millions of people who just accept them as gospel. Never mind that I've seen multiple people actually in the areas impacted reply to the original post and say "I live here, this is not true." I read multiple posts of people mocking anyone who was skeptical that the government could control the weather. It's the same thing with eating cats and dogs and schools putting litterboxes in bathrooms. Social media has some positives but more and more I'm of the opinion that those are VASTLY outweighed by the damage it causes.
