You have your logic completely backwards in high-traffic situations. Alternate merging is the certainty -- everyone knows when to merge and how. Otherwise, there are people merging at 100 different locations, no one in the other lane truly knows when/if a car is going to merge in, and it slows things considerably more. Not only do the cars in the merge-into lane slow/stop to allow the merge, but the cars in the merge-from lane are now backed up behind the car trying to merge early and that backs everyone else up even further. What most people, IMHO, don't take into consideration is that it's a two-factor decision. First question -- is traffic moving smoothly? If it is, then yes, waiting until the end is a jerk move. Get over in the flow of traffic before the lane ends. But if traffic is stopped, then the best way through -- as proven by multiple studies -- is to use all available space (e.g., the lane that's ending until it ends) and then merge every other car. If that is done -- and there aren't jerks who either won't let a car in, or jerks who try to merge in as a second car from the merge lane -- then it works smoothly and reduces the backup for everyone. ** Edited by Nova Hokie 95 at 7/20/2024, 1:14:33 PM
