20 yrs ago, the avg HS teacher in our district made $88k. The highest made

$95k. This strikes me as little to no motivation to do your job well as the financial incentives do not vary. The testing results are good, but it seems likely the demographics are pretty helpful. We ended up sending our kid to private. On his own, he found a school that offered an International Baccalaureate (IB). We got very lucky with him, and my wife was all over his education from the jump. His HS cost us quite a bit, but he did well and the teachers were very good. Everyone, including the parents really cared about the education. This school kicks people out even a few weeks prior to graduation. On the other hand, it was a pretty open campaign headquarters for one party during elections. A friend of ours got into their administration and found almost zero motivation amongst her peers. After being coached to slow down her pace, she left. That part aside, it's a great academic environment. The only other controversy is if your kid had ambitious college plans, they really didn't encourage it. They might be right, but they didn't think kids should be obsessed with getting into the most prestigious schools. Some parents took issue with that.
