If you want a better chance to make a difference politically as a citizen

Then focus on a couple things other than the presidential, congressional, and senatorial elections. First is to vote in your local elections. Your life is way more heavily impacted by your local city council on a day-to-day basis than by who is in Washington. Second is to vote in the primaries. There really are some genuine and reasonable people out there who are interested in governing this country. But genuine and reasonable people don't rile up the lunatic fringe of either voting base. And those are the people who show up en masse for primary elections. I would love for third party candidates to be viable winners in a general election, but they really aren't. At least not yet. My favorite example is this: In 2018, there was a primary for the Republicans to pick an opponent to run against Tim Kaine for the US Senate. I'd call that a pretty important seat in the national government. A total of 304k people showed up to vote, and the winner only had 136k votes, edging out #2 by about 5k votes in a state-wide poll. Virginia has about 5.9m registered voters. But only 304k bothers to show up for a pretty darned important primary. That's about 5% of the electorate. By comparison, 3.3m people showed up to vote in the general election for that senate seat. Our political process should not be up to so few people. If you want your vote to matter, vote in the primaries too.
