Several thoughts on this

1 - It's highly unlikely you need to be wearing college apparel to be identified as an American when in Europe.

2 - Only place in Europe I've personally been treated badly (and that was just being ignored/treated indifferently, not actually harassed) is France.

3 - It might actually be a good way to strike up a conversation with a local who has some connection to VT...or even just the Commonwealth of Virginia.
