I totally love the stuffed animal thing at the Olympics.

Here we are awarding Olympic medals, one of the highest symbols of achievement, and after that we get -- stuffed animals??? It's very child-like. Precisely. It's a matter of sports psychology. I submit that those athletes most likely to succeed under the grinder of Olympic pressure are those who regard their craft with a sort of childlike joy. It gives them a sort of immunity to the magnitude of the moment and allows the athlete to be unleashed! Gold medalist skater Alysa Liu was exhibit A for this. Meanwhile, those who view the experience in a very sharpened, adult, achieving way (regardless of the age of the athlete) will suddenly feel the weight of the years working toward this moment, the endless work poured into the opportunity, and unexpectedly fold. You don't have to look any further than fellow skater Ilia Malinin to see how THAT works. So, I just love these stuffed animals. It's a reminder from the Olympics that (especially in sports) a child-like attitude is valuable and makes us more human. For those medalists who didn't win gold, that silver medal moment can often be very frustrating. The stuffed animals are a reminder that even the highest achievers need comfort. Even Nathan McKinnon.
