My daughter is an LU student and so I have been following LU for a couple of years now. Freeze is an excellent Xs and Os coach who is adept at making in-game adjustments. They seemed to be on the ropes against Akron last week, barely clinging to a 14-12 lead in the 4th Q, possibly hung over from the 1-point loss at Wake Forest (and it was a 1-point loss because Freeze went for the win via a 2-point conversion with almost no time on the clock, recognizing he was in a hostile environment and probably overmatched in overtime). Much like VT's O-Line, the blocking had become abysmal. It was obvious LU needed a spark. Rather than wait a few seasons, Freeze took out the (#2 or #3, depending on how you track it) QB and put in the 4th stringer, Hampton, probably with a series of scripted plays. The team seemed to get a lift from this and Hampton executed, taking them down to the goal line for the game-clinching TD. So while VT barely has one game-ready QB, apparently LU has 4, and all have not performed flawlessly, but have done well. And if you haven't looked at it yet, I recommend you check out LU WR Lofton's one-handed TD catch against ODU that is a Top Play of this weekend. As it stands now, I see LU handily beating VT in November in a low-scoring affair.
