So I looked it up once and the answer is pretty bizarre

So I don’t remember all of the details but apparently way back at the beginning of the yell practice tradition a guy had on janitors coveralls while giving the speech. The stairs of the building were to narrow so he had to pace to keep his balance. Since they were so big he had to continue to pull them up because they kept sliding down over his feet. They’ve all re-enacted that ever since.
