Players vs Coaching
I fully expected some struggles to establish our footing as far as execution on both sides of the ball - many questions especially about the offensive line. Clearly we are struggling to run block and the pass blocking was kind of ok until Vandy started bringing more pressure. We lost too much talent off last years' team to simply reload across the board. What I hoped to see was improvement via the new look on the sidelines. I imagined the new, more experienced coordinators would work with what we have and make us appear at least competitive despite our lack of talent/experience. Saturday's second half was putrid and hopefully not what we see going forward.
I was still very much concerned with Pry, because I've had an issue with him leaning on his defense to win games. It really rears its ugly head in situational football, where he tends to base his decisions and strategy around the defense and field position.
Much to my disappointment, Pry still seems to think he can win college football games in 2025 with defense. The unwillingness to go for it on 3rd and less than 1 on our first possession of the second half shows it again. Vandy's offense was rolling at that point, the momentum favored them, and whether we give them the ball at our 35 or their 25, they were going to score. I really believed that, and hated not going for it there. Yeah, our offense is not very good, but don't just give Vandy the ball back. Make them earn it by stopping us on 4th down or on the next series.
Pry doesn't react in those key moments- I'm talking about part of the game where things are hanging in the balance, before we are into full-on desperation mode, where the offense could impact them game by making a play, or at least by putting pressure on the opposing team. He hasn't changed, and I have to imagine by now the evidence is there that he never will. He is a reluctant head coach that wants to be around and coach defense. I hope I'm wrong, blah blah, I'm still going to watch, but I have no expectations that, even with more money injected into the program, we'll improve much as long as he is the head coach.
