FB and athletics in general
All this talk about AD’s is reminding me of something I’ve always been curious about,. Football drives the bus, we all know that, but which of our other teams are revenue generators vs. those that need shoring up. I know that is going to vary year-by-year thing, depending on which teams are hot (e.g., softball). Success generally results in an attendance (and revenue) jump, so this question pertains to an average over time. Does anybody know that?
That’s one question. Another is, where do we go from here? God only knows what will happen to athletics in the future, but personally, I see a future in which the NCAA evolves into a multi-tiered system. It will boil down to 2 giant conferences (you know who I mean) as Tier 1.
Tier 2 will still be big enough to retain some relevance and would include VT and a heck of a lot of others (most of the ACC, the bottom thirds of the SEC and Big 10, etc.). These would have their years, to be sure, but success here simply turns them into serving as a minor league for the Alabama’s, LSU’s , and Michiga’s of this world. In the current climate, is there anyone who thinks VT could retain a Michael Vick for long? I think we reached our high-water mark a few years back and don’t see us ever reaching that level again.
I can live with that. Things change. When my brothers and I were at Tech (50’s, early 60’s), we were in the Southern Conference and theoretically our rival was VMI, but we all knew better. If you had asked people who you want most to beat, the answer in order would be 1) WVa, 2) Va, and then and only then 3) VMI. Now? I think my older brother’s prediction of many years ago has reached fruition. He said, “I think colleges should be allowed to go out and hire the best team they can afford.” Well, we’re there. For myself, I could easily see us (and prefer us) going back to the days of competing with peer institutions where we actually stood a chance of being competitive, and not trying to keep up with the mega-bucks giants.

That outcome has long seemed likely, the question is, are we good with it?
