Fundamentally, I want to agree with you...
Betting on yourself, or your team, to win.
Seems straightforward to me.
If that's the only bet you make, or if none of any other bets you make, conflict.
Still, even in the best of scenarios, money talks. This goes beyond gambling, and has been around for quite a while.
Fixed games have always been an issue. Looking back in NFL History, people have long pointed to the Jets beating the Colts in SB3, as a thrown game. The AFL-NFL merger needed the Jets to win, for credibility. Green Bay won the first two, defeating Kansas City 35-10 and Oakland 33-14. The Packers never trailed in either game. Green Bay led the Raiders 33-7 before Oakland got a cosmetic score. (The Chiefs game was actually more competitive, being only 14-10 at Halftime.)
Not looking good for the AFL at that point. The NFL won the first two encounters, by an average of 22 points, more than three touchdowns. (Keep in mind that the 2 Point Conversion, in the NFL, did not exist then.)
It has been said that Earl Morrall, Baltimore's QB, played obviously badly on several key occasions. Despite numerous trips deep in Jets territory, the Colts came away with zero points, until late in the game, after trailing 16-0.
Was there any gambling involved? Why did Joe Namath, before the game, make his famous guarantee of a New York win, for the 17 (or so) point underdogs? Did he know? Was the fix in? Was that a signal to somebody, that the operation was a go?
Even if gambling, in the way we normally understand it to be, was not involved, the monetary stake of the legitimacy of the merger, was. And that, of course, means... a whole lot of money.
Were key Colt players, and maybe Head Coach Don Shula, instructed to lay down? Who knows? Or, did the Jets win fair and square? Years later, Bubba Smith, the great DE for Baltimore, gave his opinion.
Just remember - any time money is involved, fraud can happen.
The bigger the money - the bigger the possibility of fraud, and the bigger amounts of said fraud, are a great temptation.
