With one massive other difference.

When players had to sit out a year after transferring, you didn't see anything close to the current volume of annual roster raiding. College football could have survived the portal with no NIL. Or it could have survived NIL with no portal. The current bubble is completely unsustainable and when it ends, a lot of irreparable damage will have been done to the sport. One could argue it already has.
