My point is the student-athlete format at the highest level of college

athletics is basically gone with the SCOTUS ruling and House settlement. The rules have changed and schools have to be willing to play by them if they want their teams to compete at that level. If they aren't willing to play by those rules, then they will either struggle for success or be forced to compete at a different level. Here's my answer to your question and it is probably one you are not expecting or hoping for, but it is the only one you will get. If VT wants to continue being a member of the ACC and competing at that level of college athletics, then it MUST be 100% committed to play by the rules (good and bad). If it isn't 100% committed to doing that, then it probably should consider other options and accept the consequences (aka a reduction of media exposure) of this decision. College athletics has evolved to a point where schools can't have their cake and eat it too by straddling a fence in hopes it can continue living in 2 different worlds. Schools have to pick a side before the decision is made for them and accept the consequences (good and bad) of that decision.

One thing Tech does not have is an apathetic fanbase.**

Apathy has degrees. I don't even know who's on our roster outside the QB...
