There's a lot more to it than that. There's a lot of non-catholic ND fans.
Many of which never went to Notre Dame. A lot of it is reputation, history, mystique etc. not being part of a conference and not needing to be part of a conference just adds to that uniqueness of Notre Dame. that's probably one reason they don't want to join a conference. They want to be considered as different. Like it or not it works for them.
