FWIW Bob Stoops received the "Big Game Bob" nickname because he was

perceived to win enough of the big games early on in his career. The nickname stuck for his entire career even though his overall record in "big games" probably didn't justify the nickname. My point for bringing this up is that perception may matter more than the actual wins and losses. If Beamer had won a few more "big games" and/or they occurred at the "right time" in the season (or bowl season), then it is possible (maybe even likely) that people's perception of Beamer and VT would have been different regardless of his actual record against Top 10 teams. Examples could include Michigan (bowl game), Auburn (bowl game), Georgia (bowl game), Miami when MV2 was QB (Miami was #3 and VT I think was #5), Alabama (CFA Kickoff Game X2), Boise State (FedEx), USC (FedEx), and Kansas (bowl game). The same could true for Franklin and VT.

Well, Bruce Arians seems giddy about the James Franklin hire.**

If Franklin gets us to the point where we are losing only big games...
Maroon Baboon 11/18/25 01:29 PM ET
lol....the "narrative" is actually hard data, and fully legit
JoesterVT 11/18/25 01:07 PM ET
Hard to understand why

JoesterVT 11/18/25 05:09 PM ET
How many of those games are against Harbaugh, Meyer, and Day?
Happy Dog 11/18/25 01:46 PM ET
well, Kirby Smart racked up his 19-10 vs. T10 tms coached by Saban, et al
JoesterVT 11/18/25 01:52 PM ET
Believe Kirby’s record to Saban though is like 1-6

OSU and UM were the higher ranked team for the majority of games

Beamer's formula - 10 wins, ACCCG, chance at natty
TomTurkey 11/18/25 01:42 PM ET
My only issue with Franklin is not the losing close games, but that he

VT is 2-10 over the same time period. PSU has played twice as many

Data yes. Descriptive, yes. Predictive? Determinative?**
Beerman 11/18/25 01:23 PM ET
But the data is very misleading.
3Manysons 11/18/25 01:21 PM ET
That's a bizarre take, care to explain?
JoesterVT 11/18/25 01:26 PM ET
And outside of those, who else is there
VTJay 11/18/25 02:15 PM ET
An example is VT beat #10 UNC to start 2021 season
HokieAl 11/18/25 01:43 PM ET
Every team is like that, and I do hate these types of stats
hoosnowahokie 11/18/25 03:56 PM ET
Well sure, but again....we have a pretty good sample size
JoesterVT 11/18/25 01:46 PM ET
I think challenging for the conference title every 4 to 5 years
One4VT 11/18/25 01:19 PM ET
he hardly, if ever beat OSU and Michigan. so there is truth to it**
VaPoly07 11/18/25 12:55 PM ET
Franklin beat OSU exactly the same number of times that Beamer did**
