Random Franklin stats in case you ever worry about PSU fan chatter

For the past 11 seasons, 2015-2025, I took a look at how Franklin did in games where he was favored vs when he was the dog. All records shown are just straight up wins or losses during the regular season. I wanted to dig into the PSU chatter that he can't win big games. So I used spreads to see whether he was even supposed to win those games. In conference: vs teams who finished the year with 6 or fewer wins, 36-5 as a favorite, 2-1 as an underdog. vs teams who finished the year with 7-9 wins, 18-2 as a favorite, 1-1 as an underdog. vs teams who finished the year with 10+ wins, 4-5 as a favorite, 1-16 as an underdog (10 of those 16 losses were on the road). The one knock is that when the spread was less than 7 points, he was 1-5 as a favorite and 0-7 as an underdog. Of course spreads don't predict outcomes, but they do provide a snapshot of how close people expected a game to be. OOC, he was 25-1 as a favorite, 0-1 as an underdog. Some will look at his records and see the room for improvement in the games against top tier opponents. What I like to focus on is the fact that he thoroughly dominated other teams as a favorite and did it consistently against the vast majority of teams he faced. Note: I only have data for the past 11 seasons, so I don't have his first year at PSU or anything before that. ** Edited by HokieAl at 6/30/2026, 11:59:26 PM

Frank Beamer 2.0

Beamer didn't have perennial top 10-15 classes though.**

The Franklin hire was pretty short sighted when you think about it...

He played Michigan and Ohio State when they were in the top 10 or better

Old news. Weak OOC schedule, beat weaker teams, struggled w/ strong teams.

You're grading VT on the PSU curve, not the VT curve.

Eh, no. Well, Dantonio went 4-2 vs Franklin, so...maybe MSU

At this point I just want a coach who wins games, period

Back when Frank was winning 10 games with that horrible offense ...

to win the big game you have to first get to the big game

If we get 7 Wins in the 2026 Regular Season, I'd count it as a solid plus.
HokieNL 07/01/26 12:07 PM ET
And it's the games against the mid level teams that get us to 10 wins
