What does better facilities actually mean?

It seems we're redoing the weight room, the locker room, and dining hall every few years. Does that mean heat and AC in the field house? Do we need a bowling alley, water park, and super snack bar? Does it mean a super sized trophy case to display all our natties? What's keeping up with the Jones here?
