Look at VT undergraduates pre-1998 vs. today
Completely higher caliber of student is attracted to the school, which took off when VT found football success. When I started VT in 1989 it was fairly easy to gain admission. Now, its extremely competitive to get into the school. In fact, in 1989 JMU was much harder to get into than VT, but that has done a 180. You can't say there isn't a direct correlation between the two.
