Thoughts from scrimmage (long)
1. New video boards are nice!
2. Hammond looks much more comfortable in his role
3. Schutt looked to be more aggressive. We tend to think of him as simply a shooter and a liability elsewhere but he got some 50/50 rebounds and looked better on D.
4. Not ready to go negative on Hansberry based on 12 min of play. Hoping the fouls are not an issue but the T he got early on put him behind from a foul perspective the rest of the way. Game was called pretty tight so there’s that.
5. I will say his FTs looked a bit awkward….
6. Gurdak looked serviceable but has a long way to go. Likely better than expected, though. Hopefully when Dorn is available he will only be needed in emergencies. Still an improvement over Wessler from the jump.
7. Not enough data on Bedford. Good sign that MY started him and he generally defended their point which is a good sign of the confidence in him.
8. Johnson looked like himself. No obvious indication of massive improvement but no indication of the contrary.
9. Tobi looks smoother with his 3. Obviously worried about his TOs but it is one game.
10. Disappointed that Pasha is so far down the bench, particularly in a scrimmage format. Didn’t look overmatched in the short time he played and did have a few rebounds in his short time.
11. Neo… way, way too early to make any conclusions but he looked uncomfortable at times as the 1. Looked like a shorter quicker defender was a bit of an issue for him. Only took advantage of the height difference (post up) once that I recall. Seems like he would be more dominant with a traditional 3 trying to guard him. Overall, things seemed smoother with Hammond running point. It’s Neo’s first live action so we’ll see how things go as he gets more comfortable. His past performance in Greece implies he will figure it out soon.
12. Team D needs lots of work which is likely expected. Likely a lot to do with Hansberry being out so much. Numerous times the simple screen and roll led to easy buckets and help was lacking at times when we were beat off the dribble.
13. A few times when facing a zone press we pushed the advantage for easy buckets after beating the press. Something we have rarely seen in MY tenure. I hope that was not freelancing and is something we will see more of. You could fill several libraries with how much more MY knows about basketball than me but it has frustrated me so much in the past when we would beat the press over the top to create what would be a 3on2 or 2on1 advantage only to pull back to set up the half court O.

He had a much smaller role than I was expecting.

After one scrimmage? With 7 new faces? A bit early I'd say.**
