Consider the players who have entered the portal. Camden was expected to leave. He rarely played this past year. Poteat has apparently been having some medical issues, and people have wondered if he would even use his covid year. Collins is a player that the coaches would prefer to bring off the bench instead of starting. They're certainly trying to find an upgrade to start over him. Pedulla should not be blamed for entering the portal, we should also probably not blame the coaches or NIL. Instead, blame the fan that threatened him. If rumors are correct, Lynn Kidd is leaving to go to Miami and will receive at least 500,000 NIL. Even if he did not enter the portal, there was still the chance he would not return to Virginia Tech. People have been asking whether he will return to Virginia Tech or turn pro and seek to play overseas. If the NIL numbers at Miami are true, he will be making more there than he would have made overseas. So it's possible he never intended to return to Virginia Tech, but turned down the option to go pro overseas in favor of a more lucrative deal at Miami. To say we had five players enter the portal might sound bad. But when you look at the details, it makes more sense. And we can understand what's happening without assuming Virginia Tech has abandoned their basketball programs. Certainly we are focused on football. And we are not able to invest in basketball at the level we would like right now. But it's not as bad as many want to believe the situation is. Consider that Virginia Tech was willing to up their commitment to women's basketball in order to try to keep Kenny Brooks.
