Some data I'm looking at regarding NET, Non-Conf Schedules and Projections
I went down a HUGE rabbit hole this morning and haven't stopped (and you aren't going to stop me!) looking at just how messed up the NET rankings are, and how they are being gamed. We've discussed the Big12 (and Big 10 really) gaming the system the past decade or so but this year is egregious with the Big 12 (see pic below). The Big 12 racked up win after win against PUTRID competition. The average Non-Conf Schedule rank was 243 in the Big 12. They had 6 teams with schedules ranked 300 or worse this year. Because of this, they have received inflated NET rankings based on win totals and higher efficiencies (beating teams by 30 and 40 that are NET rank 330 or below). And not only did they have a worse schedule, they played more games out of conference as well (13 per team vs 11 for the ACC, Big East, Pac 12 and Big 10).
