Well yeah, the last point is obvious: it counts...

so you're saying you'd never have a situation where you'd fix something early on for the long term eg just start the new kid instead of always trying to win the game in front of you with the current unspectacular but steady kid. But come to think of it, can't say i've seen any coaches do that, always work in the new kid rewarding him with more minutes as he/she gets better.
