They're Hokies for 9-12 months...then we will have to re-evaluate.
In my opinion, that's the biggest problem with the current state of college athletics, and the main reason (among many) that I won't attend or even watch on TV. I don't believe that the vast majority of modern college basketball players feels any sort of loyalty to the university whose name is on the front of the uniform they wear. That school is simply the highest bidder for the current season, but that will almost certainly be re-evaluated before the next season. There is very little continuity from one season to the next for many programs, which makes it very difficult to feel connected with the team as a fan, in my opinion.
So, yes - technically these guys are Hokies in the sense that they were willing to accept the money offered to them by VT's NIL system for the current season. Do they love the university? It's difficult to know. Will any of them be here next season? That remains to be seen. Such is the landscape of modern college athletics, and it's not surprising to me that fan interest may be waning.
