Because teams put four and five shooters on the floor and move the ball better. It’s not just about teaching zone, though that certainly matters. The few teams that do play some zone only do it for a few possessions to change the flow and shake things up. If you watch, that’s usually about how long it takes for the opponents to start shredding them. People think that it zone is a good option for less athletic teams who have trouble in one on one matchups. In reality, to play a good zone you need really long, quick players. Syracuse was a very bad matchup for us, with three lengthy and athletic perimeter guys. And they finally have a good coach who understands how to spread the floor and let his good athletes operate. The only real solution for Virginia Tech is to get better athletes. Or to execute Coach Young’s systems really really well. This would be easier if we had a lot of depth. I think it’s time to go back to being a football school.
