It is reasonable. It's reasonable to criticize Young. It's reasonable to criticize the players, too. Everyone plays a role in this. You don't lose multiple games at the buzzer without multiple people being at fault. Young needs to coach better, especially in the final minutes, and I'm sure he understands that. The players need to execute better, especially in the final minutes, and I'm sure they understand that. Do that and you are probably in the NCAA Tournament. We wouldn't be sitting here having a bubble discussion. It comes down to simple stuff — forcing a miss on Wake Forest and Stanford's final possessions, making free throws and not turning the ball over against SMU, not fouling and sending Miami to the free throw line, etc. Those are things the Hokies could control but did not, and the other team beat them. That's on everybody. The point I was trying to make, though, is this: Regardless of who you want to blame for how this season is going, the overall situation of Virginia Tech men's basketball won't change, even if there is a head coaching change. Hypothetically, say Mike Young retires and the Hokies have to go hire a new head coach. It'll likely be a high-profile assistant coach or a mid-major head coach who is looking for a step up. They will be dealing with a nearly identical pool of resources to Young. (Maybe slightly better if there's some new coach shot in the arm in terms of donations.) Those resources are towards the bottom of the ACC. Now, you can still win. It is possible. You have to construct the right roster, coach the players the right way, go out and schedule the right games, then go out and win the right games, which means executing at a high level against other really good teams. It's certainly not impossible. It's more difficult to do when you're a lower-funded team compared to the other teams you're playing, though. For example, the Tampa Bay Rays can make a World Series here and there when the chips fall their way, and they can be a playoff contender most seasons. They can be good despite the odds being against them, but it's not as guaranteed as a team like the Yankees and Red Sox, who have more resources. You can have success, but it won't be as easy, and you might have to think outside of the box to do so. The margin for error is slim for everyone, but even more so for a team like the Hokies with the resources they have. But back to blowing leads. Imagine if Amani Hansberry doesn't lose the ball out of bounds with 4:54 remaining at Miami. Imagine if Tobi Lawal doesn't foul Tre Donaldson and send him to the foul line with 12.5 seconds left. They're controllable things. Lawal missed a foul shot yesterday with 1:33 left. Jailen Bedford missed an open three. I think that's what makes it more frustrating than anything. Tech has been in a position to win these kind of games but has tripped itself up time and time again. It's not just one thing; it's a multitude of things. Fouling in bad spots, not defending well enough, missing free throws, missing shots, not taking care of the ball, not managing the clock. That's on everybody — Young, the coaching staff, the players. They all know that, and the criticism is completely reasonable, as stated. The bottom line is VT should've won at Wake Forest, vs. Stanford, at SMU and at Miami. They blew those games. And I understand where fans are coming from when they say they want a change at the top. I've seen tweets and message board posts about it everywhere. The goal of the discussion on the podcast was to provide some perspective on the whole situation — not to reduce criticism or give the team a pass. Where does VT stand, and if a change happens, what does the situation look like? That was the point of bringing it up. I hope that makes sense. I'm not trying to keep people from ragging on Young and the team. Tech's played poorly late in games far too many times this year, and criticism is warranted. I think a lot of fans are thinking ahead to a potential change and what it would look like — trust me, that's basically all the comments on my articles and on Twitter have been — and I wanted to go, "Well, for those of you discussing this topic, here's where VT stands in terms of the ACC picture and its resources. Is the grass greener somewhere else? TBD."
