Hammond was on him. The guy just hit an unreal shot. Of all the things that could have happened on that play, most coaches would want a guy having to dribble to halfcourt and heave one at the buzzer. That's much better than inbounding the ball down the court for a normal 3 attempt, or worse yet, VT fouling on the play. I also don't put the FT's on the coach. Last night we had three of our best players with chances to end the game at the line, and they all failed. That's on them, not coach. ANYONE can become a good FT shooter if they want to (well, maybe not Shaq). But it takes commitment and practice. And guess what? The players have access to a wonderful hoops facility where they can practice FT's on their own time, to their heart's content. If I were a VT rotation player, after the UVA, Stanford, Cal, and SMU games, I'd be shooting 1000 FT's a day, on my own. What I do put on the coach is the terrible strategy against the press. I never coached any ball beyond my kids' rec league teams. But even I know that the absolute rule #1 against the press is you do not inbound the ball to the corner. And we did that twice in a row! The next rule is you do not inbound to a player who is rushing toward your own baseline. We did that as well. If there has been one consistent weakness throughout the entirety of Mike Young's VT tenure, it has been that teams decimate us when they press. Last night, that weakness bit us, big time.
