The sets are very specific. There are adaptations off it, but they are very specific. For example, last year our typical set as we crosses half-court was to pass into Mutts or Basile at the top of the key. Pedulla would then relocate to the left side of the court. He would get a pass back OR the ball would go to Cattoor coming up the opposite wing. The post would pass out and occasionally go to the 3 (Collins) in the corner or something like that, sometimes we would see a drive or a shot, but for the most part, we see some over-dribbling and then a pass back to Pedulla or Cattoor or something. We would pass into Mutts or Kidd and they would try to post up to score or pass to the perimeter. If it went to someone like Collins, he might draw a defender and kick it to Pedulla or Cattoor. The player side of it is ... our PGs tend to having scoring mentality. Pedulla shoots a lot, drives alot, looks to score a lot. Last year, it was almost too much and got him into troublesome situations where he forced it at times, and not because he had to play minutes or there was pressure to score. Cattoor was a 2nd shooting option who probably should have gotten the blal more often last year but...Pedulla.. Collins as the main 3 right now doesn't help himself by having a clunky 3-pt shot and an exaggerated back and forth dribble tendency that leads him nowhere. But others like Alleyne in the past could get shots. Basketball becomes a zero-sum game: the more that Pedulla/Cattoor shots, the less that others do. So shots for people not named Pedulla, Cattoor, and Kidd are going to be limited. That is why when we see a 3-5 pt night from Beran or Nickel, we think they suck. Sure, if they are 1-for-6. But when they are 3-for-4 and got 7 pts (Beran in the first half against USC - he might not have been 3-for-4), we think he isn't contributing. But right now, with each passing year that Pedulla becomes more experienced, he has to find a balance between always looking for his own shot and getting others involved. The team won't REALLY be good until we are "carried" less by Pedulla and we have greater distribution of the scoring load. May not address your question, but we are not going to have a reliable 4th scoring option until we try to have a reliable 4th scoring option.
