Updated VT Baseball Historical Massey Composite Rankings...
Through Week 10, below is a visual that shows our historical weekly Massey Composite Rankings (starting with Week 3 each year).
With the team's recent performance, they have rebounded to be where they were at after Weeks 3 and 6 and currently most closely resemble the 2019 team (which was Szefc's 2nd year) in terms of past teams.
And looking at past team historical performance from Week 10 through the end of the season, just one of Szefc's teams finished with a better ranking than what they held in Week 10. Here is a look at the Week 10 vs. Final Rankings under Szefc:
- 2026: 62 > TBD (TBD)
- 2025: 34 > 59 (-25)
- 2024: 26 > 49 (-23)
- 2023: 37 > 38 (-1)
- 2022: 11 > 8 (+3)
- 2021: 40 > 62 (-22)
- 2020: n/a
- 2019: 60 > 71 (-11)
- 2018: 138 > 155 (-17)

(Clemson and NC State) or below us in RPI. There are no more "good losses" as these are the teams we are competing with for the last bids.
Still feels like a long shot. SOS is great, but we haven't won. The eye test doesn't help either as the committee will see some really ugly losses on weekends.

in our 3 series against NC State, California and Clemson.
Right now, our RPI is #41 and we are 4-12 in Q1 games and 0-1 in Q2 games and 16-6 in Q3/Q4 games. All of three of NC State (#46 RPI), California (#68 RPI) and Clemson (#39 RPI) would be Q2 games as of now so I don't think going 5-4 against them is going to move our RPI needle much but 6-3 would look a lot better and I think could potentially push our RPI into the 30's if we won all of our non-conference games and at least 1 or 2 in the ACC Tournament.
The other thing 6-3 would do is get our conference record to .500 which I think is important. Looking at the last 3 years, there has only been one ACC team that made it into the NCAAT with a below .500 conference record (NC State in 2023 at 13-16) and they finished that year with the #23 RPI (not sure what they were at time of NCAAT selection) so being below .500 in conference and being outside the top 30 in RPI would likely be an uphill battle for getting selected.
