2025 VT Baseball Summer League Updates: Week of 7/7…

This past week was relatively quiet as a number of players did not play in any games and may be seeing their summer winding down but the week did see an incoming freshman (Willie Hurt) have arguably his best week of the summer and Brett Renfrow also got a start in the USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series. Player(s) of the Week • Willie Hurt put together arguably his best week of the summer as he played in 5 games, going 9 for 20 and finishing with a slash line of .450 avg / .455 obp / .650 slg / 1.105 ops while recording 3 multi-hit games which included 4 2b. The good week helped him improve his summer performance to a .276 avg and .743 ops with 6 2b. Other Notes • Brett Renfrow got the nod to start the second game of the USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series and had a solid performance. Despite taking the loss in the game, he managed to go 3.0 innings and gave up just 1 earned run on 5 hits, 1 walk and 3 strikeouts. He was let down by his defense which had an error that led to an unearned run and to a 2-1 deficit when he left the mound and things only got worse after he left as the USA ended up losing the game 8-1 (and also lost all 5 games in the series). • David McCann only played in 2 games this past week but he hit well in his opportunities as he finished going 2 for 7 (.286 avg) and recorded 1 hr, 2 rbi, 2 bb and 3 r that contributed to a 1.159 ops for the week. Behind the plate, he also threw out another base runner to give him 2 caught stealing on the summer. • Mycah Jordan didn’t have a great week overall, but he had a huge game on 7/8 as he went 3 for 6 with a home run, 4 rbi and 3 runs scored. He wasn’t able to follow that game up the rest of the week, finishing with just a .222 avg and .689 ops. • Nick Locurto had his worst week of the summer as he went 0 for 14 across 4 games. The hitless week resulted in his average and ops going from .326 and .877 to start the week, all the way down to .280 and .781 to end the week. • Sam Gates also had a bad week. He went just 2 for 15 (.133 avg) which has lowered his summer average to .200 and his ops to .669. • Brody Roe had a really rough week. In his first outing of the week on 7/10, he failed to record an out while giving up two hits, walking two and hitting one batter with all five coming around to score as earned runs and only threw 7 of his 18 pitches (39%) for strikes. Then he finished up the week on Sunday, 7/13 with a 1.1 inning relief appearance where he gave up 1 er on 2 hits and a hit batter that also included a wild pitch. With the outings, his summer era and whip are up to 8.44 and 2.06 respectively. • Brendan Yagesh made a 4.0 inning relief appearance on 7/11. In it, he finished with a line of 4.0 innings, 5 h, 3 r, 3 er, 2 bb, 6 so on 88 pitches with 56% for strikes. Overall, it wasn’t a terrible outing, but it was his worst of the summer and his era and whip are now at 3.13 and 1.17 respectively across 23.0 innings pitched. • Anderson French was released by Cotuit on 7/7, so it is likely his summer is done. With Cotuit, he finished slashing .194 avg / .326 obp / .222 slg / .548 ops in 43 plate appearances with just 1 2b and 1 rbi and 2 runs scored. • Besides Anderson French, here are the other players that didn’t play this past week: Sam Grube, Preston Crowl, Chase Swift, Peyton Smith, Tyler Stone, Brendan Cowen. Kaden Hart also appeared in only one game as a pinch runner so his summer may be winding down. Also, Madden Clement is not on the Bourne roster and Josh Berzonski has not shown up on Cotuit’s roster (was supposed to play the second half of the summer), so not sure we’ll see either of them this summer.
