the voters weigh the mid-week games differently than the weekend series. As far as whether the team should still maintain a "play to win the game" mentality or not, it would be interesting to see how VT's mid-week record compares to the other "peer" programs. If the data shows more teams have a higher win percentage than VT and more postseason appearances than VT, then it could suggest that it would be in VT's best interest to take these games more seriously. If VT wants to continue saving its top 2-3 pitchers for the weekend series, then maybe it is time for the coaches re-examine their player development program. Particularly if there things, even little things, the coaches can do differently to see even more improvement in the #4-5 pitcher in the rotation. If the coaches truly believe the development program is maximizing the pitcher's potential, they should do something similar with the fielders on the roster. If an athletic program, doesn't matter the sport, truly wants to get better or take that next step, then at some point the coaches have to do some self-reflection to see if there are any areas that could be improved in the program. A program should not be able to obtain absolute perfection, but it should still be the goal the program strives to achieve.
