I think one of the umps gets buzzed by the weather command center
Whenever the radar detects lightning within 7 miles of the stadium. Once he gets the buzz, he has to stop play as soon as practical (which basically means before the next pitch). Timing was exactly the same in softball (3:09pm) but it just so happened that UNC hit a bases clearing double and the next batter hadn't stepped in yet, so it wasn't in the middle of a count.
