From what I know, traveling costs money to pay for transportation, a place to sleep, and food. The team only has so much money and so they may plan fewer away games during non-conference series to save money. Note the Hokies played most of their early season non-conference games at home. So, I'm assuming they did that to save money. Additionally, UVA draws a much larger crowd at their baseball stadium. And although it appears that the Hokies have steadily increased attendance for baseball games over the past couple years, it still doesn't compare to how many seats that the Hoos are able to pack at the Dish. In 2022, the average attendance at UVA home baseball games was 3,288, while Tech managed just 1,090 average attendance at English Field. The Hoos have proven to anyone who manages a stadium around Virginia their brand value by bringing in larger numbers to watch their games. My assumption here would be that they may be able to come close to making a profit at games. UVA also just signed what I assume is a very lucrative deal with EvoShield for their baseball uniforms. Having previously been outfitted by Nike, who produces uniforms for all the other UVA sports teams. My assumption is that UVA has a higher revenue from their baseball program and also uses a healthy sum of available money from the school to fund the program. Much more so than what the Virginia Tech baseball program gets. This leads to UVA having more money to travel and put on these sorts of events. I could be off with my guesses here, but that's my theory. One thing that conflicts with my assumption is that we did play VCU in a fall scrimmage at the stadium for the Flying Squirrels in Richmond. I wonder if the VCU baseball program has a nice relationship with the front office there.
